I hope y'all are staying safe. Please continue to do Achieve3000.  Try to do the 5 step lessons. You and your parents can do some of the ones that are just article and discussion.   You can finish The Giver either by reading it yourself online or use an audiobook.  On cpsb.leanzillion.com, I have opened up the quizzes for The Giver.  There are Language worksheets on my Blackboard website.  Other activities can be found under the coronavirus information on the CPSB website. Click on it; then online learning resources; then middle; then middle school digital leaning.  Once there click ELA and then explore.  Email me with any questions.

If your teacher is using Blackboard Collaborate to deliver content online (replaces Zoom), here is how to access:

1. From a computer:
   • They will log into Blackboard from Class Link (http://.launchpad.cpsb.org) or from the CPSB website by hovering over Parents/Students tab, then clicking on Blackboard. 
   • They will login with their username and password. (This is the same username and password that they log into a CPSB computer. (username is first initial of first name + first initial of last name + student id number.) 
   • Students will click on your site. BB Collaborate will be in the Course Menu.
   • Student will click on the session title followed by Join session. 
2. From a mobile device.
   • Students need to download the Blackboard app.  (Do not use the Blackboard Collaborate app)
   • The following information is needed to log into the app:
     • School's Name:  Calcasieu Parish Public Schools
     • Username:    first initial of first name + first initial of last name + student id number. (DO NOT include @cpsb.org)
     • Password: this is the same password that a student uses to log into a computer and Office 365.
     • Click on the three lines in the upper left corner.
     • Click Courses.
     • Click on the teacher's course.
     • Click on Collaborate.
     • Click on Join Session.

Students can log into Achieve 3000 to complete activities.

Below you will find links to sites that you can use to work on topics for science and social studies.  If you need anything, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Enter the class code txm6892.  Then find your name.  I have set up two assignments--one for science and one for social studies.  These are not for a grade but each contains several different books on topics we've either covered in class or I felt kids may be interested in.  Using my class code, you will be able to access these books and many more Monday-Friday during normal school hours.  Parents, there is an option for you to create a home account, but I'm not sure how much it costs monthly.  With my account, you will have free access through the end of June.

Select science or social studies, fourth grade, then click on "See all skills."  Students can complete work each day on a topic of their choosing.  Many of the available topics have been covered in class.  There is a restriction on how many free questions they can work on.  Otherwise, you will need to set up an account.

3. To celebrate National Ag Day, National FFA will provide virtual webinars on Monday, March 23, and Tuesday, March 24. Monday’s sessions will begin at 1 p.m. EDT and discuss advocating, interacting with government officials, and building an elevator pitch. Tuesday’s sessions will focus on storytelling, identifying audiences, and reviewing the agriculture, food and natural resources value chain.

4. The e-lesson for the week celebrates baseball. Tomorrow was supposed to be Opening Day of Major League Baseball. There is a lot of science in keeping those baseball fields game ready. Please review the basics of what we have learned so far this year, and what we would be doing if we were in school now.

-  all letter sounds for basic letters a-z
-  the sounds made by the digraphs; qu, th, sh, ch, ng
-  "tricky words" a, of, the, all, 

The rest of this unit's tricky words are:  one, from, was 

We would also teach double consonants like miss, buzz, Bill, duck, stuff, etc...

With that being said, they should be able to read any words that follow the pattern "Cvc" which means consonant-vowel-consonant, where the vowel sound is "short "

Having your child read is extremely important!! I think it would be a great idea for your child to write words you call out!!

We would be beginning to write simple sentences and write stories which they would illustrate.

Ex. The red dog runs. Please remind your child that every sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with an end Mark.

In math, they can practice counting to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's.  They can practicing adding and subtracting with sums to 10.

We were beginning to read a click to hour and half hour. We were taking apart a number into smaller numbers.  Ex:  7 and 3 are partners for 10.  
 

Khan Academy is a good place to start.  Other Apps we use in class are starfall, pbskids.org, gonoodle.com, and draw and tell.

The resources listed below are OPTIONAL.  The following resources provide students with a summary or review of  the information that 5^th grade students are taught throughout the “entire academic year” in Science.  So please do not stress about having to know ALL of this!

Once you click on the website above, your students can watch the videos of Module 3 & 4 at their own pace.  There is an additional link towards the bottom of that page called “Family Tip Sheet,” this is an additional resource offered to parents for each Module.  This link gives a summary of that Module along with options of ongoing conversations to have at home, other websites, suggested activities, and books that go along with the content of each Module.

5th Grade Social Studies:

Optional Social Studies Assignment:  For those students INTERESTED in doing so, (again optional), you can have them decorate the cover of a notebook and create their very own COVID-19 journal/diary.   This is something that they could choose to do as often as they want to (daily, weekly, etc.)  They can create and decorate a notebook, or something available at home, and use this as their journal.  This journal will later become a primary source of COVID-19 history.  Some guided questions that they can respond to in their journal are:

• What announcements did they make today? Do you agree or disagree with their decisions?
• What was “school” like for you today?
• How did you feel about something you saw today? (Did you see something unusual or interesting?  You can include things that gave you hope, worried you, or even something that made you laugh.)
• What did you eat today?
• How do you feel today? Please have your student put the date on each page and have them “practice cursive handwriting” by signing their signature at the bottom of the page for each entry in their journal.  (If they are into charting and keeping up with the number of cases and such, they can include this information in their journal entries as well.)

2. Cook together and have them measure.  Ask if you double or triple the reciepe how much is each ingredient is needed, etc.  Ask what time is it on analog clock several time a day.  Count you loose change around the house.  Build something together and let them measure, or just let them measure rendom items and tell you their measurements. Use everyday activities as a teaching moment.

ELA:  1. Read with your child from books you have at home.  2. Practice handwriting if they have poor handwriting. 

3. Have them write a written response to questions you ask about the book ya'll are reading together.

4. Have them write questions about the book ya'll are reading together, then you answer their question.  They'll try to make it challenging for you.

Parents, you may save this link using google chrome for your child to work in Waterford.  This is the program we use at school for computer lab.  You can save the link to the desktop and they click on it each day to work.  The student will click their number they use in class and their name to login.  Please verify they are clicking on the correct one before they begin working.  They will start in Reading and then it will time out and they will move to Math and Science. The kids love computer lab and Waterford offers ELA, Math and Science.  It is great for them to do each day.  I think it can also be used on an ipad.  Download the Waterford app.  You can visit waterford.org for more informaiton.

Spelling Lesson 17

I will be sending out new spelling words every other week to work on through the remind app and on here. Please have your child practice writing these words and make flashcards using their spelling words.  They can also rainbow write their words using different colors for each letter of the word. 

Remember to read each day.  This can be a story from a book, online book using tumblebooks or epic websites to practice reading.  You can also utube the stories we are on in our Journeys book each week that goes with the lesson.

Please continue to practice adding and subtracting as much as possible.  Use blocks around the house, toys, cooking with your parents to add or subtract.  If you are doing math on paper be sure to remember that adding is green (go,count on, count up)  red is subtract (stop, pay attention, take some away).  Make your learning fun.  You can use chalk outside to write your words or do math as well.

Weekly Home Learning Activities by Grades

I just wanted say hi and let my students know I am thinking and praying for them.  Here are a list of things students can do to keep busy throughout the time we are out.  They can go to zearn.org for Math.  Students know their user name and passwords.  Please have them practice their multiplication facts.  Students need to be readind as much as they can during this time.  There are some really good apps they can be using right now.  They are teach me 3rd grade, 3rd grade reading, and 3rd grade social studies.  The website math-aides.com has worksheets for all grade levels.  Please do not hesitate to call me if you need anything.  Please let your child know that I love them and hope to see them soon!
